Usage Note 33782: Valid characters for user IDs and passwords in SAS® 9.1.3 for the Windows, UNIX, and z/OS environments
Unless otherwise specified later in this note, you can use only the following characters for user IDs and passwords in SAS 9.1.3 for the Windows, UNIX, and z/OS environments:
- uppercase letters (A through Z)
- lowercase letters (a through z)
- numbers (0 through 9)
- special characters, such as the exclamation mark (!), number sign (#), percent sign (%), ampersand (&), apostrophe ('), asterisk (*), hyphen (-), full stop (.), slash (/), colon (:), equals sign (=), question mark (?), circumflex accent (^), underscore (_), the left ({) and right curly bracket (}), the vertical line (|) and the tilde (~).
You cannot use Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) special characters that are defined in RFC 2253. This list of special characters includes a leading space, a trailing space, and any of the following characters:
- comma (,)
- plus sign (+)
- double quotation mark (")
- backslash (\)
- left angle bracket (<)
- right angle bracket (>)
- semicolon (;)
To prevent cross-platform interoperability problems, you also cannot use the following characters:
- open parenthesis [(]
- close parenthesis [)]
- dollar sign ($)
Beginning with SAS® 9.2, for the Windows environment only, you can use letter characters as defined by the Unicode Standard 3.2. The Unicode definition includes uppercase and lowercase letters from A through Z as well as letter characters from other languages. In a broad sense, a letter is an element of an alphabet or syllabary or an ideograph. This means that a letter character can be an alphabetic character such as German ä, French ç, Polish ł, Russian б, Turkish İ, or Hebrew ג. A letter character can also be a katakana (syllabary) or kanji (ideograph) character.
